Program Description

The Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program provides grants to eligible institutions of higher education (IHEs) to support programs that address the basic needs of students and to report on practices that improve outcomes for students.


Types of Projects

Grants awarded under this program have performance periods of three years. Grantees must implement projects that are designed to take a systemic approach to improving outcomes for underserved students through coordinating efforts with Federal, State, or local agencies, or community-based organizations that support students, to address two or more of the following basic needs:

  1. Food assistance.
  2. Housing.
  3. Transportation.
  4. Health, including access to mental health support.
  5. Childcare.
  6. Dependent care.
  7. Technology.
