Federal Student Loan Programs Data Book FY94-FY96
Table 13. Federal Direct Loan Program (FDLP) number of borrowers and dollar amount of Stafford Subsidized, Stafford Unsubsidized, and Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) loans, by academic level: FY94-FY96
This table shows the number and percentage of FDLP borrowers and dollar commitments made to postsecondary students between FY94 and FY96, by academic level (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and graduate students). Total FDLP commitments for all loan programs are shown in addition to the commitments for each loan program: Stafford Subsidized, Stafford Unsubsidized, and PLUS.
- In FY94-FY96, the proportion of total FDLP dollars committed to seniors and graduate students decreased. In contrast, the proportion of FDLP dollars committed to freshmen and sophomores increased. As a result, in FY96, the proportion of total FDLP dollars committed to those in all academic levels became more evenly disbursed.
- For the Stafford Subsidized and Stafford Unsubsidized loan programs in FY94-FY96, the proportion of the total numbers of FLDP dollars committed to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors increased overall. In contrast, the proportion of the total numbers of FLDP dollars committed to seniors and graduate students decreased.
- The greatest proportion of PLUS dollars were committed to freshmen and sophomores, while the greatest proportion of Stafford dollars were committed to seniors and graduate students.
- Seniors received the lowest proportion of PLUS guaranteed loan dollars. Graduate students were not eligible to receive PLUS loans and, therefore, no funds were committed to these borrowers.
- In FY96, one-half of PLUS loan dollars were committed to freshmen, while 19.2 percent of Stafford Unsubsidized loan dollars were committed to freshmen.
- In FY96, 24 percent of PLUS dollars were committed to sophomores, while 14.3 percent of Stafford Subsidized dollars were committed to sophomores.
NOTE: FDLP loan data in FY94 only include one-quarter of that fiscal year, and FDLP loans were restricted to a small number of institutions.
