New IDEA 40th Anniversary
In November, 2015, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the passage of Public Law 94-142, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). OSERS Blog: Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP)
Do you have a child in your classroom or at home who has difficulty understanding educational media because he or she is visually impaired, blind, hard of hearing, deaf, or deaf-blind? A solution is the free-loan collection of described and captioned educational media provided by the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) through Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) funding by the U.S. Department of Education.

Raising Awareness on Specific Learning Disabilities
By raising awareness of the needs of children with learning and attention issues, we can all make certain that no child falls through the cracks. A new policy guidance clarifies that there is nothing in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that would prohibit the use of the terms dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia in IDEA evaluation, eligibility determinations or Individualized Education Plan (IEP) documents.

New Early Learning Site
The goal for ED's new Early Learning Web site is to help improve the health, social-emotional and cognitive outcomes for all children from birth through 3rd grade, so that all children, particularly those with high needs, are on track for graduating from high school college- and career-ready.

OSERS is committed to the broad values of inclusion, equity and opportunity for infants, toddlers, children, youth and adults with disabilities to actively participate in all aspects of life. OSERS promotes inclusion, ensures equity and creates opportunity as we strive to improve results and outcomes for children and adults with disabilities.



To provide leadership to achieve full integration and participation in society of people with disabilities by ensuring equal opportunity and access to, and excellence in, education, employment and community living.

In implementing this mission, OSERS supports programs that help educate children and youth with disabilities, provides for the rehabilitation of youth and adults with disabilities and supports research to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. OSERS provides a wide array of supports to parents and individuals, school districts and states in three main areas—Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Research—through its two main components: OSEP and RSA.
