The Maryland Science Mathematics Resident Teacher (MSMaRT) program is an early-entry resident teacher (i.e., alternative certification) program housed in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP). The program serves high-need middle schools in Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS). MSMaRT will recruit career changers and recent college graduates who are committed to and have the potential to effectively teach mathematics and science to a diverse student body in high-need middle schools. The first cohort of 25 MSMaRT residents will begin the summer before the 2010-2011 school year, with similarly sized cohorts beginning each of the following 3 summers. MSMaRT is a 31 credit-hour post-baccalaurate program designed to help recruits become fully credentialed and employed in a reduced period of time. It includes an 11-week pre-employment program designed to help recruits acquire a beginning repertoire of pedagogical skills; ongoing university coursework that exposes them to critical content including national and local curriculum standards, learning theory, and inquiry; and an induction and mentoring component that supports their transition into their new profession and aids in their retention. During their first year residency, MSMaRT residents teach half the course load of a full-time teacher, in order to provide residents with the time needed for collaboration, reflection, and ongoing university coursework. In return for $9100 of tuition subsidies (PGCPS will pay a portion of the residency costs) and a summer stipend of $4500, MSMaRT teachers agree to teach in high-need PGCPS middle schools for a minimum of four years.
