The grantee is a Bureau of Indian Affairs school district on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. The partners are the Oglala Lakota College, the Chadron State College, the Oglala Archives, the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, and the National Indian Education Association. The main aim is to effectively teach the state standards on U.S. history in all classrooms and to separate U.S. history from the existing social studies curriculum. Thirty teachers from the district and 30 others from 12 other reservation schools will participate in the three-year intensive training program. Distance learning will be employed at the Oglala Lakota College's regional centers and a five-day workshop will be held annually.
