The Teacher Quality Enhancement Grants Program for States (TQE-S) has awarded 2 new grants totaling $5,270,107 for the first year of a three-year grant period. The grant award performance period was effective October 1, 2005. Listed below are the grant award recipients and the amount awarded for FY 2005.

  1. Guam Department of Education (GU) $2,689,045
  2. Iowa Department of Education (IA) $2,581,062

The purpose of the TQE-S grant program is to provide grants to promote improvements in the quality of new teachers, with the ultimate goal of increasing student achievement in the nation's K-12 classrooms. State grants are designed to improve the quality of a state's teaching force by supporting the implementation of comprehensive statewide activities in the areas such as teacher licensing and certification, accountability for high-quality teacher preparation, and recruitment.
