Working within the state grant category, members of the Appropriations Committee nearly tripled FY 2000's set-aside for EL/Civics that totals $70M for FY 2001. EL/Civics funds will go to states as follows: 65% to states with the largest numbers of immigrants; and 35% to states with the largest recent increases in immigrant population. However, every state, regardless of its immigrant population, will receive a minimum of $60,000 in new funding for EL/Civics. For details see http://thomas.loc.gov/.

There will be no English Literacy and Civics Education discretionary grant program for FY2001. For more information regarding EL/Civics funding in your state, please contact the area coordinators.
