Program Description
The Pinellas County Character Partnership project will develop model schools of character serving approximately 25,000 students in grades K-12 and 5,000 teachers and staff in 26 schools, including five exceptional student centers. A Character Education Mentor will support schools in establishing model lessons, a character education handbook, student leadership workshops, a districtwide Ethics Bowl, cross-age service-learning events and cross-school mentoring for replication. A Parent-Community Consultant will provide parent-child home activities and conduct a marketing campaign to establish lasting linkages to the community. The project will offer staff training for integration of reading curricula such as Circle of Friends, More Alike than Different and Yes, I Can to address the needs and inclusion of exceptional students.

Goals and Objectives

  • To increase academic achievement among all participating students
  • To reduce the number of suspensions in participating Pinellas County schools
  • To enhance local capacity to implement and sustain an effective character education program

Evaluation Design
Pinellas County Character Partnership will conduct a quasi-experimental research study to examine the impact of character education on discipline and the success of a reading initiative. Evaluators will examine the level of character education implementation using the pre-post test results of Character Education Partnership’s Quality Standards Self-Assessment Tool.
