Program Description
The COOL Kids program involves 22 schools in Sonoma, Mendocino, and Napa counties in a character education program promoting good character that builds a sense of belonging and promotes academic achievement. COOL Kids will involve 1,300 students in grades K-9 in the treatment group. The project will utilize the Tribes cooperative learning process, and KidzLit and KidzMath curricula. Project personnel will train over 200 teachers and staff in the curricula to support positive modeling and curriculum delivery. The project will focus on teaching tolerance, respect, responsibility, cooperation, honesty, and empathy through integrated programs, parent involvement and teacher training.

Goals and Objectives

  • To establish a curriculum woven through school-day and after-school activities that emphasize cooperative learning and integrate character education with academic content in reading and math
  • To provide teacher and after-school staff training, unifying the services provided to students throughout the core and after-school day
  • To give parents strategies to reinforce character education curriculum at home by engaging at least 500 parents per year in evening family events, family-literacy nights, and English as a Second Language classes
  • To increase levels of academic performance in students receiving the COOL Kids curriculum

Evaluation Design
This project will conduct an experimental evaluation design. The COOL Kids program includes a rigorous evaluation utilizing random assignment to assess program outcomes, incorporating an experimental design for new schools. The evaluation is both formative and summative and takes a mixed-methods approach to data collection and analysis.
