Example: Multiple Approaches

A State uses multiple approaches to assess student performance in life science, as illustrated below.

Content standards require students to--

plan and conduct investigations, which involves making observations, collecting, organizing, and analyzing data; and communicating the results of the investigations; and

demonstrate understanding of key concepts in life science and interactions among these concepts.

Measurement strategies include--

multiple-choice and short open-ended items;

long extended-response tasks;

notebook describing two investigations conducted by each student and the results of the investigations; and

checklist completed by teachers based on direct observation of student investigations.
