F. Communication Services

Communication Services oversees plans, and coordinates efforts to inform and engage the Department's constituencies and the general public about the Department's programs and its school improvement agenda. The unit employees a variety of communications methods and strategies, including publications; television, satellite and video productions; webcasts; the management of conferences and special events; and the Information Resource Center (1-800-USA-LEARN)/ and a variety of programs that recognize excellent schools and teachers. The Deputy Assistant Secretary for Communication Services is also responsible for the Information Resource Center, Event Services and Recognition Programs.

Information Resource Center

The Information Resource Center coordinates and operates a citizen contact center to provide access to information, referrals, and in-depth assistance on all aspects of Federal education law and policy as well as nationally focused Departmental initiatives. Services are provided via a toll-free telephone number (1-800-USA-LEARN), email, and written correspondence. The Center provides regular feedback to senior officers concerning citizen contacts and also manages the ED locator and ensures that it is an effective service to the general public and the Department.

Event Services

Event Services provides a full range of events management services, including event planning, venue selection, transportation, logistics, on-site registration, etc., to create high-quality, cost-effective conferences and meetings to communicate national educational priorities and explain the Department’s programs and policies.

Recognition Programs

Recognition Programs plans and coordinates the Department’s major recognition programs for schools and students nationwide. The programs honor achievement as they facilitate communication and sharing of best practices within and among schools and the public. Some of the programs included are the Blue Ribbon Schools, Presidential Scholars and, the President’s Education Awards Program. This staff also has management authority over various internal events including the commemorative and Heritage programs. Also, a key role is played in working with the Department’s outside organizations such as the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Middle School Principals Association, and others.
