If you seek grant funds to plan and start up a new charter school, or for dissemination activities, where you apply for grant funds depends on where the proposed charter school will be located. Please note that this information was last updated in November 2013.
Apply to Your State for State Educational Agency (SEA) Grant Funds
Charter schools located in one of the states listed below should apply directly to their state education agency for grant funds. These states have received CSP funds under the Charter Schools Program State Educational Agency (SEA) grant program, and are responsible for awarding subgrants to individual charter schools. The U.S. Department of Education does not decide which charter schools within each state receive funds. For more information, please contact the person in your State whose name is listed under Funding Contacts on this page.
If an individual charter school is located in a state or a territory that does not receive a charter schools SEA grant, you may be eligible to compete for a direct federal grant under the Charter Schools Program Non-State Educational Agency (Non-SEA) grant program. Applicants for this competition should contact the U.S. Department of Education’s Charter Schools Program directly at charterschools@ed.gov.
The following states and territories do not have charter laws and so are ineligible to receive CSP funds:
Alabama Kentucky Montana Nebraska North Dakota South Dakota Vermont West Virginia
