Marisa White Bold is the Chief of Staff for Innovation and Improvement, which manages more than 25 programs, including Investing in Innovation (i3), Promise Neighborhoods, and a portfolio of strategic investments focused on great teachers and leaders, education innovation, school choice and community engagement, arts, and technology. During her time with the Department, she has served as a core member of several teams that have developed policy and supported implementation for high priority reform programs. These programs incent and support dramatic improvement in outcomes for students nationwide. Previously, Ms. Bold was Chief of Staff of the Implementation and Support Unit, which was created to pilot new approaches to support and strengthen education reform in states and districts through design and implementation of a portfolio of over $50 billion in competitive and formula grant programs, including the Race to the Top program.

Prior to joining the Department, Ms. Bold was a Director in the Office of Accountability at the New York City Department of Education. Ms. Bold led a team that designed, selected, and implemented a comprehensive portfolio of formative assessment programs to support data-driven instructional decision-making, collaboration and sharing of effective practices, and improvement of student achievement in over 1,500 schools. As a Leadership Fellow at NewSchools Venture Fund, Ms. Bold supported entrepreneurial solutions that enable school systems to become more performance-driven and utilize data to drive decision-making.

Ms. Bold was inspired to pursue a full-time career in education while serving as an Education Pioneers Fellow at Aspire Public Schools, and previouisly worked in management consulting and organizational development in the private sector. Ms. Bold holds a BA in Anthropology from U.C. Berkeley and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
