I especially want to acknowledge the work of Pat Seppanen. Dr. Seppanen played a key role in the initial conceptual framework of the study, gave insightful editorial commentary on the literature review, guided the research and dissemination plans to completion, and served as a leader for one of the field research teams. She provided sound advice and guidance throughout her tenure on the project.

I want to thank Beckie Anderson and Shelley Billig. Ms. Anderson was responsible for completion of two of the final case studies (Natchez, MS, and Rochester, NY). She was given the sometimes daunting task of finding appropriate quotations from hundreds of hours of audiotaped interviews; she succeeded when others would have given up. Dr. Billig joined the project in its final months and provided both writing and editorial expertise to the final products for the study.

Special thanks go to the field teams who collected and analyzed data, and wrote initial draft case study narratives. They worked with us to explore the issues faced across the sites. The members of the field teams were: Pat Seppanen, team leader for Adult-Child Learning Experiences, and Janet Brown; Michael Livesay, team leader for School Restructuring, and Cari Swenson; Rivian Bernick, co-team leader for Comprehensive Districtwide Programs, and Cari Swenson.

Without the support of the office staff we could not have done our job as well. Thanks to Ed Allen, Liz Goodman, and Mary Ann Strassner. Thanks, too, to Dagnija Langberg who -- as a new staff member -- pitched in to help with the last minute details.

A special thank you to the project's advisory group who helped with the initial conceptualization of the study, reviewed preliminary findings, and gave advice about our practical products. The five panel members were: Nancy Berla, formerly with the National Committee for Citizens in Education; Don Davies, past President of the Institute for Responsive Education, Boston University; Joyce Epstein, Johns Hopkins University, Co-Director (with Don Davies) of the Center on Families, Communities, Schools & Children's Learning; Warlene Gary, Project Manager, Center for the Revitalization of Urban Education, the National Education Association; and Patrick Shields, SRI International.

To Ralph Adler, Diane D'Angelo, and Chris Dwyer a special thank you for your work on the conceptualization of the issues that are the basis for the cross-case analysis and the final practical product. Working with you was -- as always -- enlightening and rewarding.
