A Compact for Reading Guide - February 1999
Adobe Acrobat Reader

Using pdf files

We are using files formatted in pdf (portable document file) so you can download copies of the Compact for Reading Guide and the School-Home Links Reading Kit. To use these files, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader, the software package necessary to read and print pdf files. We recommend that you print the pdf files with the Adobe Acrobat Reader instead of using your browser's print option. You can download the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader software by following this link.

Once you have downloaded and installed Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer, you are ready to download, read and print pdf files.

About the pdf files:
From this web site, you may download pdf files from the Compact for Reading Guide and the School-Home Links Reading Kit. You can download pdf files from the Compact for Reading Guide through its Table of Contents page. Downloading these files will allow you to have a copy of the Guide on your computer.

You can download pdf files from the School-Home Links Reading Kit through its Table of Contents page also. This Kit is divided into grade levels. Each grade level has 100 School-Home Reading and Book Links. These Links are grouped by reading objectives and are available to you as pdf files.

For the Links, the name of each pdf file contains important information. For example, the file name "k01-4.pdf" indicates that inside this pdf file are four activity sheets (pages 1 through 4) for the kindergarten level. The first letter indicates the grade level of the School-Home Links Reading Sheets: k - Kindergarten; f - First Grade; s - Second Grade; and t - Third Grade. The number value in the file name indicates how many pages are contained in the particular file. Knowing this coding system will help you identify specific files later. We suggest that you print a copy of the appropriate table of contents so that you can refer to it later.

Printing pdf files:
The major function of the Adobe Acrobat Reader is to allow you to print your own copies of pdf documents. Using the print command from the menu bar, or the button with the printer icon, will bring up the print menu on your computer screen. Here you can make a number of selections, such as number of pages or which pages to print.

When printing, it is important to select the option "Shrink to Fit" in the print window. This makes sure that no part of the document will be cut-off in hard-copy form. This will allow you to make a master copy which you can then use to duplicate. For the best results, print from the Adobe Acrobat Reader and not your Internet browser.
