The Kean/Newark Collaborative, a partnership of Kean University's Center for Bilingual Education and the high-need school district of Newark, New Jersey, will improve student achievement by recruiting, preparing, and retaining 120 highly qualified educators over the next five years to teach in the district. These individuals will be drawn from recent college graduates and midlevel professionals committed to teaching mathematics, science, English, or bilingual education/English as a Second Language. The Collaborative will provide selected candidates with: (1) accelerated preparation for certification, including specific training on working with English-language learners who have been mainstreamed, supervised internships with extensive mentoring components, and extensive field work; (2) annual scholarships; and (3) professional support for their first three years as teachers based on the Professional Development Schools model for a learning community. This model brings together new and veteran teachers to jointly assess and enhance their skills and knowledge and to develop ongoing support networks. After the grant is completed, the Collaborative will be integrated into the existing teacher development program to build local capacity; the successes and lessons learned will be used to strengthen and expand existing recruitment, preparation, and retention strategies.
