The New Teacher Project (TNTP) has a partnership with high-need school districts in three cities to create alternate routes to certification, attracting recent graduates and mid-career professionals to teach in high-need subject areas. Over the three-year duration of TNTP, 390-420 new teachers will be recruited, prepared and certified in the high-need Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) of Indianapolis, Indiana; Memphis, Tennessee; and New Orleans, Louisiana. In Memphis and Indianapolis, TNTP will establish specialized teacher recruitment, preparation, and support programs targeting educators in critical district-defined subject areas, turning out nearly 50 carefully selected and trained new teachers every year for three years. New Orleans, meanwhile, will see efforts to rebuild and revitalize area schools, a joint effort of TNTP and the Orleans and St. John parishes. By expanding and refocusing the Louisiana Practitioner Teacher Program (LPTP), TNTP can ensure a high-quality alternative certification provider is available to quickly train and certify 30 to 40 outstanding new teachers for these parishes each year. TNTP will not only address the immediate needs of the schools and communities it serves, but also will play a major role in the formation of new models of effective teacher recruitment, preparation, and support for school districts nationwide.
