The Idaho State Board of Education, in partnership with the State Department of Education, five Idaho colleges, 20 high-need school districts, and the NW Regional Educational Laboratory, is implementing three state alternative certification routes to prepare new teachers. The project will select, prepare, supervise, and support 138 new teachers drawn from applicant pools of paraprofessionals, mid-career changers, and recent college graduates. Over the five-year grant period, each college will complete curricular/program revisions needed to implement one or more of the state's alternative teacher certification routes. The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence provides the currently approved computer route alternative, with others added as approved during the grant period. Graduates are committed to teach in a high-need school and Local Educational Agency (LEA) for at least three years meeting subject area needs in music, English as a Second Language, early childhood special education, social studies, English, foreign languages, biology, and mathematics.
