Charlotte-Mecklenburg's project is designed to improve instruction in American history and address the needs of students at risk of educational failure. The project will target 5th, 8th, and 11th grade American history teachers. Activities for the program include summer institutes that combine the strategies of the History Alive program; quarterly meetings with partners to ensure ongoing collaboration; and the training of teacher mentors who will coach and work directly with classroom teachers throughout the program. The district's partners include the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, the Museum of the New South, and several heritage organizations such as the Afro-American Cultural Center, Historic Latta Plantation, and Charlotte History Museum.
