Bio/Overview: Katie Taylor is currently Director of Teacher Leadership Initiatives at the Center for Strengthening the Teacher Profession (CSTP) in Tacoma, WA. Her teaching journey started at age 7 when her mother watcher her use the chalkboard in her room to teach her younger brother (then 4) to read and do addition. Taylor’s love of reading and literature resulted in her earning a bachelor’s degree of English, but it took a while longer to find her way to teaching. What finally won her over was tutoring middle school students at an at-risk school, and realizing she could teach the real-life antiheroes like the ones she adored in literature, and affect a different outcome for them by offering a different high school experience than the ones they, and she, had experienced. Taylor began teaching high school English in Portland, Oregon after completing her graduate degree. Her teaching contexts have varied from urban to suburban and spanned Oregon and Washington.

Educational Values/Philosophy: A systems-thinker, Taylor is interested in how we can focus our time, resources and creative energy on what matters most: the classroom, and help to empower teachers to meet the needs of all the students we teach.  Recognizing that there are no one-size fits all solutions to the complex work of education, Taylor is interested in amplifying the voices of those who work with students every day to make sure they have a say in the way our students are educated.

Achievements: National Board Certified Teacher, Teacher Ambassador Fellow (2010-2011), University of Washington-Bothell adjunct faculty, Learning Forward Advisory Board Member (WA Affiliate); Board Member – Abeo School Change

Leadership Experience: After working in public education for 16 years, Taylor now works with education on a statewide level. During the 2010-2011 school year Taylor served as a Teacher Ambassador Fellow with the US Department of Education. Prior to her current role, Taylor served as a high-school level instructional coach for all grades-all subjects at a high needs school.

Affiliations: Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (CSTP-WA network of NBCT), Coalition of Essential Schools, Learning Forward, ASCD.

Education: Taylor received a bachelor’s degree of English from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. Later, she graduated from The Ohio State University with a Master’s in English Education.
