Bio/Overview: Merriott currently teaches fourth grade at Sycamore Hills Elementary in the Independence School District in Independence, Missouri, where she has taught for nine years. Currently, she is teaching fourth grade and loving it! Merriot didn’t always know she wanted to be a teacher.  Growing up, she went through various career choice phases…nurse, cosmetologist, voice-over actor, scientist, and of course--first female president.  Like many kids, Merriott used to play school with her sister and friends, but teaching as a career never really crossed her mind.  In high school, Merriott spent a couple of summers working at a church day care.  The first year she had a group of second graders. It was then when she thought, “Hey, I kind of like this!”  The next year Merriott was in charge of the two-year-olds and thought, “How can anyone do this all day long?”  Though she quickly realized that early-childhood wasn’t exactly the direction in which she wanted to go, Merriott knew that she enjoyed working with children.  After her freshman year in college, Merriott declared elementary education as her major.

Educational Values/Philosophy: Of course Merriott enjoys teaching the students, and teaching provides her a creative outlet.  But most importantly, she is able to play a part in changing the lives of the children and families she comes in contact with.  Merriott stays in education because she wants to play a part in influencing the future.

Leadership Experience: While teaching, Merriott has also been a Student Council Sponsor, PTA Parent and Family activities co-chair, student newspaper founder and sponsor, Building Teacher of the Year, and the local branch’s treasurer for the International Reading Association.

Affiliations: Independence NEA, International Reading Association

Education: Merriott received a Bachelor of Arts from Graceland University in Lamoni, IA. Wanting to continue her education, she earned my Master of Arts in Teaching from Webster University in 2008. Merriott then went on to pursue and achieve National Board Certification in 2009. In 2010 Merriott began work on a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
