Bio/Overview: Calvert currently works as the Teacher Liaison for the Department of Education, a position she created after her experience as a Washington Fellow during the 2010-2011 school year. After earning a Bachelor of Journalism in 1984, Laurie worked for advertising agencies in Georgia and North Carolina as an account executive. After nine years in the advertising business, she quit her cushy job and returned to school full time to change careers to earn a teaching license at the University of North Carolina, Asheville (1995). Calvert taught middle school language arts at Valley Springs Middle School in Buncombe County, North Carolina for nine years and later moved to Enka High School, where she taught high school English, journalism, and SAT prep. She is a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) with a Master’s Degree in English Composition and Rhetoric.

Educational Values/Philosophy: On the first two days of school, Calvert sees herself as the bar setter, the one with high expectations for everyone, including myself. For the rest of the year, she is the coach, encouraging, teaching, building relationships, facilitating, and helping everyone to get over the bar.

Achievements: Calvert is an NBCT and holds a Master’s Degree in English Composition and Rhetoric.  During the summer of 2007, she was selected as one of 15 teachers to participate in a five-week seminar entitled “Say Something Wonderful: Teaching the Pleasures of Poetry” at DePaul University. 

Leadership Experience: As a 2010 Teaching Ambassador Fellow and now Teacher Liaison, Calvert has led the design of Built for Teachers, describing the Department’s proposals for reauthorizing No Child Left Behind, a teacher landing page on the Department’s website, Teaching Matters, a newsletter for and by teachers, and teacher input on the Vision for the RESPECT project. Prior to this, Calvert published and presented in a variety of contexts about topics involving teaching and/or English and the language arts. In the course of her teaching career, she took on a variety of leadership roles: she proposed, planned, and co-taught an SAT prep course with a math teacher, was the school’s yearbook advisor, and served on a variety of committees. Outside of her district, Calvert worked as a regional screener for North Carolina Teaching Fellows, served on the Technical Assistance Team for High Schools that Work, and evaluated State Tests for English for the Department of Public Instruction at NC State University in Raleigh.

Education: Calvert received her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and went on to the University of North Carolina-Asheville to earn her teaching license. Calvert then earned her National Board Certification, and recently completed a Master's degree in composition and rhetoric at Western Carolina University.
