The Metropolitan Nashville Public School District, the 49th largest school district in the country, will expand capacity to provide public school choice to students who attend schools identified for improvement. Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is requesting MSAP funding to assist in the establishment of six new magnet schools; Wharton Elementary, John Early Middle, Pearl-Cohn High, Hattie Cotton Elementary, Bailey Middle, and Stratford High School.

The purpose of thematic magnet schools is to reduce the minority group isolation in these particular schools with higher than the district average of minority students while providing public school choice to students attending schools identified for improvement, corrective action, or restructuring under Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

MNPS upholds a clear academic focus from Pre-K through grade 12. Students attending schools in MNPS have many choices in elementary through secondary grades to develop and maintain their interest in school. To enhance the conventional school curriculum, Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools currently provides thematic magnet school opportunities such as visual and performing arts, science and mathematics, Montessori, Paideia, and business and communication.

The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools proposes to establish, through funding from the Magnet School Assistance Program, six new thematic magnet schools. This plan has been enthusiastically supported by the district leadership, leadership at the schools, teachers, parents, the community, local higher educational institutions, and national corporate sponsors and partners. The six proposed agnet schools have limited resources to carry out special programming and are some of the most racially isolated in the district.
