Springfield (MA) Public Schools seeks funding under the Magnet Schools Assistance
Program to support four magnet schools in their efforts to bring about the equity of achievement long anticipated in the 56 years that have followed upon Brown v. Board of Education.

The target schools in this “Scaffolding and Accelerating In Diverse Learning Environments” project proposal are: Springfield Central High School (Central) (2072 students); Springfield High School of Science and Technology (Sci-Tech) (1320 students); Van Sickle Middle School (915 students); and STEM Middle Academy (345 students).

The special curricular magnet programs for the four schools are: Central: Advanced Studies and the Arts; Sci-Tech: STEM Academies with 21st Century Global Communications; Van Sickle: International Baccalaureate and 21st Century Global Communications; STEM Middle: STEM and Expeditionary Learning.

This proposal anticipates achievement of several key project objectives, among them:
1) reduction of minority group isolation at Sci-Tech and Van Sickle;
2) expansion of capacity at Central and STEM Middle to assist both in reducing minority group isolation at several low performing feeder schools in the district and in providing innovative educational opportunities for students opting to enroll there under the school choice provisions of Title I of the ESEA;
3) specific improvement in academic achievement for all critical sub-groups; and
4) increased enrollment and engagement of secondary students in advanced level courses and ultimately postsecondary education.
