Even Start Statewide Family Literacy Initiative Project Goals
- To expand and strengthen family literacy services in South Carolina by using existing infrastructures to support school districts and community partnerships in the implementation of Even Start models of family literacy
Project Description
South Carolina plans to establish three family literacy technical assistance centers, one each in three different parts of South Carolina, by contracting the services of exemplary family literacy initiatives in the State. TA centers will mentor at least two State or federally funded family literacy programs in early stages of development. The initiative will also implement a Statewide training program for family literacy practitioners, administrators, and evaluators of State and federally funded initiatives. An existing Act 135 Technical Assistance Network facilitated and coordinated by the State Department of Education will provide the framework for training and assistance. A public awareness campaign will target legislators, school district administrators, and other policymakers through visual, interactive, and other media presentations (i.e., newspapers, brochures, and TV).
Priorities
- Using research on reading and literacy in program planning
- Implementing a professional development plan for staff
- Increasing the intensity of family literacy activities for school-age children (up to 7 years old)
- Improving local evaluation methods and practices
- Absolute Priority: Family Literacy Performance Indicators
