Even Start Statewide Family Literacy Initiative Project Goals

• Improve the reading and work preparedness of adult learners
• Increase the literacy proficiency of migrant families with ESOL needs
• Improve model family literacy programs
• Improving REA grantee projects by incorporating family literacy performance indicators
• Increase the reading readiness skills of children

Project Description

The Maryland Family Literacy Consortium was formed in __________. The consortium plans to achieve the above stated goals as part of its overall project plan to create system change and improvement by:

• Establishing and using performance indicators to measure the success of family literacy programs Statewide
• Identifying best practices and sharing them among programs
• Providing professional development and technical assistance to local programs
• Expanding direct services through the Maryland Family Reading Plan

Priorities Addressed

• Using research on reading and literacy in program planning
• Implementing a professional development plan for staff
• Increasing the intensity of family literacy activities for school-age children (up to 7 years old)
• Improving local evaluation methods and practices
