Sustaining Science Equity Through Service seeks to correct historical inequities for females and other underrepresented classes of high school students as shown by their achievement on state science assessments. This project seeks to correct these inequities through a multi-pronged approach, using a variety of strategies that have proven effective with students of poverty, disability, and Limited English Proficiency. At the same time that we are focusing on science achievement for underrepresented high school students, the school district will also launch a program to ensure equity in all programs. In order to make science more accessible and relevant to underrepresented students, we will weave it into original research projects to be done under the guidance of university faculty. Project students will be of service to their community, and the world via the Internet. In addition, we seek to boost students understanding of scientific principles through the use of engineering classes to extend their learning. Quality out-of-school time experiences will also boost interest, and achievement. Students will also help to guide and to create programs that ensure that females and underrepresented groups will be prepared and eager to join the project as they enter high school. Through program activities and engaging with multiple partners, we aim to increase the percentage of female students served by the WEEA program who achieve advanced proficiency on state science assessments, the percentage of female students served by the WEEA program who achieve proficiency on state science assessments, as well as show that the percentage of WEEA projects whose female participants demonstrate statistically significant higher mean increases in achievement compared to mean increases of a comparison group based on pre and post test data.
