Florida's Partnerships in Character Education (FPCE)

Grant Number: R215V010004
Project Period: 7/1/01 - 6/30/05
FY 2001 Award: $250,000
FY 2002 Award: $250,000
FY 2003 Award: $250,000
FY 2004 Award: $250,000

The purpose of this project is to build on the foundation set by the State of Florida Character Education Advisory Committee and to develop a statewide model partnership. This partnership will link both established district programs and pilot district programs in character education with programs in law-related education, service learning, and conflict resolution in the K12 schools. These programs will then foster the development of positive character attributes such as caring, civic virtue and citizenship, justice and fairness, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness and other traits identified by partners as important for Florida's youth.

The project, Florida's Partnerships in Character Education (FPCE), will establish a statewide resource center, conduct evaluation and research related to best practices, and conduct regional and state conferences for the identification and dissemination of high quality programs that demonstrate a positive impact on the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and actions of our children.

The Florida Department of Education will serve as a partner in FPCE along with school districts and local schools, state and national resources, and the Consortium for Social Responsibility and Character in Education. FPCE will serve as a clearinghouse for character education activities in the State of Florida, and will serve all 67 districts through its Web site, materials clearinghouse, and regional and state training conferences.

The student outcomes associated with FPCE activities include: reduction in violent and disruptive behaviors, increased sense of social responsibility and civic virtue, and an increase in positive behaviors related to positive character attributes.
