Program Description
The Youngstown City Schools' project will give special attention to bridging cultural differences between the district’s primarily African American and Hispanic students and parents and its primarily Caucasian staff. Character Education Coaches will model for and assist teachers in using the Capturing Kids’ Hearts curriculum to encourage positive relations between teachers and their students. Coaches will conduct workshops to help teachers with character education integration, developing social contracts to promote specific character traits, and refining their discipline techniques. Also, Coaches will teach the Teen Leadership curriculum in seventh and eighth-grade classes, expanding it to elementary and high schools by the third year of the project. Efforts will be extended into the community to engage parents, business and government leaders, and other stakeholders. The project will serve approximately 8,500 students in grades K-12 and 900 teachers and staff in 20 schools.

Goals and Objectives

  • To reduce discipline referrals, unexcused absences and failing grades
  • To improve teacher-student relationships

Evaluation Design
Youngstown’s project will conduct a quasi-experimental research study to determine the impact of curricula integrated with all students, and to determine the additional impact of the Capturing Kids’ Hearts and Teen Leadership classes with selected groups of students. Students who receive direct exposure to the curriculum will be compared to those who do not.
