Program Description
The Guilford County/Forsyth County Middle School Character Education Study will establish a climate of caring, respect and responsibility for all within the school buildings. Literature and narrative selections from the curriculum which highlight a moral message will be used to facilitate reflective discussion promoting moral growth. Service-learning project experiences will reinforce the character development messages. The project curriculum and activities will be aligned with the North Carolina Student Citizen Act of 2001 mandating character education and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Trained and certified Character Development Coaches will provide training and support to teachers. The project will serve approximately 5,500 students in grades 6-8 and 500 teachers and staff in six schools in Guilford County.

Goals and Objectives

  • To integrate character development into existing state and local content standards
  • To develop a character development certification model to enhance professional development
  • To implement cooperative learning, questioning and journaling strategies to facilitate student reflection on moral and social issues
  • To develop habits of civility, and social and moral development in students
  • To develop student service learning opportunities and reflection on service projects
  • To involve parents and community

The project will use a experimental research design (longitudinal factorial) and will collect and analyze a mixture of quantitative and qualitative data from weekly teacher logs, focus groups, interviews, surveys and aca
