Program Description
The T.R.U.E. Initiative will collaborate with community agency partners and local school districts to embed character trait concepts into student learning. This will be accomplished by using the Peddlesfoots character education curriculum, within the context of a broader intellectual character-building pedagogy in Saginaw County. The project includes the implementation and evaluation of the Peddlesfoots character education curriculum. Peddlesfoots was developed by local early childhood educators to promote nine character traits. Early childhood educators, other professionals and parents will use curriculum kits to reinforce the nine traits, moral decision-making and positive conduct. The T.R.U.E. Initiative will focus on providing professional development, instruction and character-building activities to positively impact families and young children, including children with disabilities. The project will serve approximately 2,000 children in preschool through third grade, including at least 35-50 early childhood educators in 13 local public school districts as well as local non-profit and/or faith-based agency sites.

Goals and Objectives

  • To provide character-building resources and professional development for early childhood educators in preschool through third grade and parents, including the Peddlesfoots teacher and parent curriculum kits
  • To provide character-building resources and professional development to agency service providers serving at-risk families and children, including the Peddlesfoots teacher and parent curriculum kits
  • To measurably improve professional and parental understanding and capacity to foster and support positive character traits in young children
  • To measurably increase positive character traits in young children
  • To measurably improve academic performance and related behaviors in young children, e.g., literacy skills, social and emotional competence, attendance rates, and truancy

Evaluation Design
The T.R.U.E. Initiative will employ a quasi-experimental evaluation design relying on pre and post test survey instruments, parent and professional observation records, and school data.
