The CHARACTERplus® Way for Southern Illinois is a Madison County character education partnership serving all schools in Madison County over a four-year school phase-in project. Wood River-Hartford School District will provide oversight; and Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis will provide project management based on its development and Missouri-wide implementation of CHARACTERplus®. Teachers will integrate the CHARACTERplus® Way data-based planning model for school improvement into every curricular area. It will combine the Ten Essentials of CHARACTERplus®, the Plan-Implement-Refine (PIR) planning cycle, and Caring School Community™ process. The project will serve approximately 43,000 students in grades K-12 and 1,835 teachers and staff in 13 public school districts with 78 schools.
Goals and Objectives
- To build capacity to improve school climate and student achievement
- To develop district and school cultures in which students have a sense of community, autonomy, belonging and competence
This project will conduct an experimental research design. The CHARACTERplus® Way for Southern Illinois project will use a stratified random experimental and control group multi-tier research design. Three surveys will be used to collect character education, climate and implementation data.
