Program Description
Gadsden’s Character Education Initiative (CEI) will implement the Positive Action Program classroom curriculum and activities from the Principal’s Kit, Counselor’s Kit, Family Kit and Community Kit. CEI will address rising discipline referrals and suspensions, truancy and academically low-performing school performance. Positive Action training for teachers will focus on classroom management and teacher-student goal setting. The project will serve approximately 1,500 students in grades K-8 and 100 teachers and administrators in three schools.

Goals and Objectives

  • To improve student performance in reading and math as measured by the percentage of students scoring level 3 or above by 2 percent per year for a total of 10 percent
  • To reduce discipline referrals and suspensions (both in and out of school), and incidences of crime and violence at participating schools by 2 percent per year for a total of 10 percent
  • To improve attendance as measured by a decrease in the number of students considered truant at the participating schools by 2 percent per year for a total of 10 percent

Evaluation Design
Gadsden will conduct a quasi-experimental research study. The evaluation plan will include measures of teacher and student attendance, student disciplinary referrals and incidences of inappropriate school bus behavior. The Character Education Quality Standards self study and climate surveys will be used to analyze school effectiveness.
