As we complete the second year of implementation of the landmark No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), I would like to express my appreciation for your efforts in support of higher standards, greater accountability, and improved student achievement in reading and other subjects for all of the nation's children. We have made tremendous progress, and I know it has not been easy. As a former superintendent, I understand very well the challenges that day-to-day implementation of historic reform like No Child Left Behind poses to those on the front lines. In addition to the substantial resources we have already provided in implementing the law, I have established the No Child Left Behind Superintendents Hotline.

In recognition of your crucial role in implementing the law, the Hotline is a special resource for superintendents seeking answers to questions about No Child Left Behind and its implementation. We welcome your questions on any topic, including Reading First, adequate yearly progress, the highly qualified teacher provisions, public school choice options, and supplemental educational services. The Hotline will put you a phone call or e-mail away from targeted, concise, and rapid responses to your pressing questions about NCLB. My expectation is that it will help all school districts across the country implement NCLB more effectively. The Hotline is available exclusively to superintendents.

The NCLB Superintendents Hotline has begun operation and is staffed on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time. After hours, the Hotline is available to receive messages. Superintendents will be able to contact the Hotline by phone, toll-free, at 1-888-NCLB-SUP (625-2787) or by e-mail at NCLBSUP@ed.gov. Enclosed, please find your personal NCLB Superintendents Hotline card for quick reference in using the new service. The Hotline staff will ensure that all issues are addressed as quickly as possible. Also, if you would like to receive regular updates on Departmental news and activities, please be sure to provide the staff with your name, district, and contact information.

I hope you will find this new resource, in conjunction with the wide variety of policy guidance documents available on the Department's Web site, www.ed.gov, helpful in turning the vital vision of the No Child Left Behind Act into a reality in every school. I send my best wishes for the new year.
