Security Checklists

Security checklists are important tools designed by experts at the Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) to aid education stakeholders with identifying critical items to include in the agency data governance plans and data security plans. The checklists are designed primarily for the state educational agencies, local education agencies, the postsecondary community and other parties engaged in building and using education data systems to aid these stakeholders in examining their existing data policies and practices against the best practices recommended for data governance, risk assessment, and other relevant areas of data security, privacy, and confidentiality.

Each check list identifies an important topic, such as security policy, user access security, internet and network security, and describes key items that should be considered when designing or evaluating data governance approach within that domain. Applicable resources are identified for each item in the Commonly-Cited Resource document (more). The checklists can be used as a self-evaluation tool to assess agencies’ preparedness for technological or other challenges of secure data management in case the Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) staff is unable to provide a site visit.
