Mathematics

Standard 11: Statistics and Probability

…in grades K-4, the mathematics curriculum should include experiences with data analysis and probability so that students can--

  • collect, organize, and describe data;

  • construct, read, and interpret displays of data;

  • formulate and solve problems that involve collecting and analyzing data; and

  • explore concepts of chance.

Note: NCTM created about 13 standards like this one for each of three grade clusters (K-4, 5-8, 9-12). That is 40 standards, in all, plus explanations and sample learning activities. NCTM standards provide a coherent vision of what it means to be "mathematically literate." They are designed to be used to "guide the revision of the school mathematics curriculum" and assessment.
