Example: Multiple Measures for Multiple Purposes

A State’s writing assessment includes two components. A multiple-choice portion covers standard grammatical and editing skills. An essay section requires students to write compositions in response to two standard prompts. Essays are scored for composition (based on organization, focus, logical flow of ideas, and diction) and grammar (based on usage and mechanics). The pattern of student scores on the multiple-choice assessment and the direct writing assessment are used to help in instructional planning.
