EXAMPLE: Appropriate Assessments for Early Learners

Observations, interviews, and samples of work are all useful in determining how well students are progressing. Assessment approaches used with young children need to reflect good instruction and to be integrated with classroom activities. Classroom-embedded assessment procedures provide immediate, familiar and easily interpreted information to teachers. Such tasks do not necessarily look exactly like instructional activities, but they do reflect components of good instruction. Such tasks provide data for program evaluation, for informing parents, and for improving instruction. Involving students in assessing themselves and including student self evaluation information is one way to promote the independence that is an essential goal of early childhood education.
