FY 1998 State and Local Education Agency Drug and Violence Prevention Data Collection Grant Program Awards

This competition makes awards to entities that propose projects that develop, improve, expand or enhance the collection of data related to youth drug use and violence, and develop and implement processes to ensure that high-quality data are used to inform policy, assess needs, select interventions, and assess the success of drug and violence prevention activities funded under the Safe and Drug- Free Schools and Communities Act State Grants program. Projects may be Statewide in scope, or limited to an individual local educational agency (LEA) or LEAs in consortium, with enrollments of 30,000 or more. Projects must be coordinated with existing State and/or local data collection efforts.

Title: State and Local Educational Agency Drug and Violence Data Collection for Kentucky

This project will update and expand Kentucky?s capacity for collecting youth drug use and violence data through development of a statewide, web-based data collection system. Research Triangle Institute (RTI), a nonprofit organization, in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Education will expand current data collection efforts, improve their reliability, and support dissemination of data to school districts.

Title:Utah Center for Effective Drug and Violence Prevention

This project will support development of an electronic web-based reporting that will allow schools to conduct school needs assessment and record incidents of discipline referral, violence, and drug use in an objective, accurate, and timely manner. The system developed will provide immediate analysis and reporting of assessments of recorded data, and will allow educators to identify, target, track and predict specific patterns or concerns. Educators will also be trained to make data-based decisions regarding changes in their primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention efforts, as well as to communicate with parents and the community about results.

Title: Iowa Statewide Data Project

This project is a joint effort of The Higher Plain, Inc., the Iowa Consortium for Substance Abuse Research and Evaluation, and the National Peace Institute. Staff from these agencies will be assisted by an advisory group including representatives from the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa Department of Human Rights, and local school districts and other constituent groups.

The project will developed a statewide data collection systems that effectively gather data on youth drug use and violence and integrates with existing efforts of the Iowa Departments of Education, Public Health, and Human Rights. Staff from Iowa?s 377 local educational agencies will be provided with technical assistance on the use of data to help inform policy, select appropriate interventions, and assess the success of drug and violence prevention activities in their districts.

Title: New York City Safe and Drug-Free Schools Data Project

This project is designed to develop a system-wide approach for the New York City Public Schools System that will enable it to strengthen and expand its data collection efforts, and increase the capacity of staff to use high-quality data in decision making. Superintendents, principals, and prevention and data collection staff will participate in grant activities designed to build skills in areas including developing needs assessments, data collection and analysis, data interpretation and use, development of school profiles, and use of data and analysis by policy makers.

Title: Oregon Drug Use and Violence Prevention Data Collection Project

Designed jointly by the Oregon Department of Education and Portland State University, this project proposes to maximize the participation of local educational agencies in Oregon?s integrated proposal to identify and target resources to youth at high risk of delinquent involvement. The project will improve Oregon?s capacity to collect data on student alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and youth violence at the county, community, district and school levels, as well as expanding the capacity of counties, communities, and school districts to use data to assess needs, select interventions, and assess success of drug and violence prevention efforts.

Title: State and Local Educational Agency Drug and Violence Prevention Data Collection for Maine

Research Triangle Institute (RTI) in collaboration with the Maine Department of Education and the Office of Substance Abuse, will implement a state-of-the-art system for collection of data related to substance use and violence among youth. When fully implemented, the system will support local and state monitoring and evaluation needs. The project will assist all LEAs in gathering and reporting data on youth violence and prevention activities, improve the quality and completeness of data reported by schools and local units, respond to Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act reporting requirements, and provide access to local and state data to serve the reporting and evaluation needs of State and local agencies.

Title: State and Local Educational Agency Drug and Violence Prevention Data Collection -- Department of Education

This project supports hands-on training for six New Jersey school districts (Bridgeton City, Clifton City, Ewing Township, Freehold Regional, Jersey City, and Linden City) to insure that drug and violence prevention programs selected for implementation are consistent with the results of a thorough assessment of objective data about the problems, that each school district establish measurable goals and objectives for its prevention efforts, and utilize appropriate data collection methods and systems to assess the success of their efforts. The project is designed to build the capacity of the New Jersey Department of Education and staff in local school districts to collect, analyze, and use high-quality data to information policy, assess needs, selection interventions and assess effectiveness.
