Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act
Section ---. Section --- of the bill would amend sections 409A (Data Base and Information Line), 409B (Early Awareness Information Program), and 409C (Data Base and Information Line) of the Act.
Section ---(1) of the bill would amend section 409A of the Act to eliminate the term "establish" since the database and toll-free information line have been established. The Department would still be required, however, to maintain and improve the database and toll-free information line.
Section ---(2)(A) of the bill would amend section 409B of the Act to change the name of the section to the "College Awareness Information Program". Section ---(2)(B) of the bill would amend section 409B(a) of the Act to authorize the Secretary to make awards, including grants, under the section to private institutions, agencies, and organizations, as well as to institutions of higher education and other public institutions, agencies, and organizations to: (1) conduct an information program to broaden awareness of postsecondary educational opportunities programs for all students and adults and encourage economically disadvantaged, minority, and at risk individuals to seek higher education and to seek higher education and financial assistance counseling at public schools and libraries; and (2) give the Secretary the authority to disseminate college awareness information and related data, including establishment and maintenance of an electronic site for such information and data.
Section ---(3) of the bill would amend section 409C to revise the section heading to conform to the subject of the section and to authorize the appropriation of $15,000,000 for fiscal year 1999 and such sums as may be necessary for each of the four succeeding fiscal years to carry out this chapter.-###-
