Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act

College Awareness Information Program

SEC. --- . Chapter 5 of title IV of the Act is amended--

1. in section 409A, by striking out "establish and maintain" and insert in lieu thereof "maintain and improve";
2. in section 409B--
   1. in the section header, by striking out "EARLY" and inserting in lieu thereof "COLLEGE"; and
   2. by amending subsection (a) to read as follows:

1. " PROGRAM AUTHORITY.--The Secretary is authorized to make grants to, and enter into contracts or cooperative agreements with, institutions of higher education and other public and private institutions, agencies, and organizations to--
   1. " conduct an information program designed to--
      1. " broaden awareness of postsecondary educational opportunities; and
      2. " encourage economically disadvantaged, minority, and at risk individuals to seek higher education and to seek higher education and financial assistance counseling at public schools and libraries; and
   2. " disseminate college awareness information and related data, including establishment and maintenance of an electronic site for such information and data."; and
   3. by amending section 409C to read as follows:

"SEC. 409C. There are authorized to be appropriated $15,000,000 for fiscal year 1999 and such sums as may be necessary for each of the four succeeding fiscal years to carry out this chapter.".
