ALFRED R. RAMIREZ

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
WHITE HOUSE INITIATIVE ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE FOR HISPANIC AMERICANS

Alfred R. Ramirez is the Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans (WHIEEHA). WHIEEHA is an interagency working group created by President Clinton's Executive Order 12900 to support the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. As the Executive Director of WHIEEHA, Ramirez coordinates research, public hearings and expert panels to assess the status of Hispanic education. These finding will be included in a report to President Clinton apprising him of the condition of education for Hispanic Americans and proposing solutions to improve it.

Prior to his appointment in 1994, Ramirez was an Associate Director of the Office of Presidential Personnel at the White House, where he directed Hispanic recruitment efforts and coordinated the placement of Presidential appointees to Federal agencies. He also served as the Senior Advisor to the Public Liaison for the Corporation for National Service.

From 1992 to 1993, Ramirez served as President of the 2000 Partnership, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles which focuses on public safety, housing, and local and county government efficiency in Southern California. From 1989 to 1992, he was President of Cisneros Communications. From 1987 to 1989, he was the Managing Director for INROADS. Ramirez served as a personnel specialist and college recruiter for Transamerica Life Companies in Los Angeles from 1985 to 1986. From 1984 to 1985, he served as a special assistant to then-Mayor of San Antonio, Texas, Henry Cisneros. Ramirez was an Assistant Director of Admissions and Minority Recruitment at Columbia University from 1980 to 1984.

Ramirez has served on boards of community and national organizations, including the National Civic League, Alliance for Redesigning Government, the Ethnic Coalition, Rebuild Los Angeles' Racial Harmony and Discourse Committee, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, and an advisor to the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda. He has received the Kellog Foundation's National Leadership Fellowship, the 1989 National Network of Hispanic Women Award, the National Urban Fellowship Award, and was named one of Hispanic Business Magazine's 100 Influentials in 1994.

Ramirez received a B.A. in Political Science and Urban Studies from Columbia University, and has participated in graduate studies in Public Administration at the Bernard M. Baruch College at CUNY.

Ramirez is originally from Los Angeles, and currently resides in Washington, D.C. He is the oldest of five children, and enjoys spending time with his nieces and nephews.
