Steven N. Schatken
Assistant General Counsel

Steven N. Schatken has served since 1988 as Assistant General Counsel for Regulatory Services. He oversees legal and management services to the Department relating to the development and implementation of regulatory policy, including the Department's regulatory reform initiatives.

Mr. Schatken has been in the Department of Education and its predecessor -- the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare -- since 1970. During several extended transitional periods, he has served as Acting Deputy General Counsel of the Department of Education. During a six month period in 1998, he was the Acting Director of the Department's Office of Management.

Mr. Schatken was born in Swannanoa, North Carolina, but grew up in Walton, New York, a small town in the southern Catskills. He received his B.A. degree from Middlebury College in 1966 and his J.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1969.

He received the Presidential Meritorious Federal Executive Award in 1994 and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare's Superior Service Award in 1979.
