News and Events
Last fall, the Department, together with the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE), convened a forum of researchers, policymakers and practitioners to discuss the issue of turning around low-performing schools. A set of briefs was prepared to summarize the forum.
The Department launched the Turning Around Low-Performing Schools Initiative in July 2000 with an Improving America's Schools Summer Institute. Over four hundred participants attended this conference in state teams to specifically focus on strategies for turning around low-performing schools and to begin working on state action plans. The conference demonstrated the interest and enthusiasm for this initiative and laid groundwork for the future.
The Leadership Team of the Turning Around Low-Performing Schools Initiative will present at all three 2000 Improving America's Schools Regional Conferences. The conferences will be held September 18-20 in Sacramento, California, October 2-4 in Louisville, Kentucky and December 13-15 in Washington, DC.
