This project is a concerted, statewide drive to reach high standards in English /Language Arts with all schools and communities working within a shared framework. Shaping this framework, building statewide ownership for it, and creating the conditions for its realization are the vital tasks of the state leadership team.

Nevada Literacy 2000 will meet the state's need for an English curriculum framework reflecting world-class standards linked to programs of professional development and teacher certification and recertification. The three-year project will include: annual community forums; research into other standards and framework; a professional development program; development of certification and recertification requirements linked to the framework; and a review and reworking of Nevada state English assessment.

The framework and standards will be developed by a Curriculum Framework and Standards Committee guided by an Advisory Committee. Nevada Literacy 2000 will be assisted by the state English consultant and two advisors. A draft framework has been developed and is currently being critiqued statewide.

Over three years, the project will provide direct inservice training for approximately 400 Nevada teachers, K-12, representing every school district and private school in the state. The project will create three major dissemination documents: 1) Nevada Programs That Work, 2) The Nevada English/Language Arts Framework and Standards, and 3) Strategies for Implementing the Nevada English Framework and Standards. The project will conclude with a dissemination conference for educators from Nevada and other states.

A cadre of teacher leaders will serve as a major delivery strategy, facilitating local school professional development and information resources for the teachers and other personnel.
