Higher Education and Vocational Education Publications?Managing the Price of College: A Handbook for Students and FamiliesThis publication shows how families in various income groups manage to pay for college. Based on real experiences of families, the handbook describes the costs of dependent students--those who are financially dependent on their parents--who are pursuing either an associate's or bachelor's degree. ?A Parallel Postsecondary Universe: the Certification System in Information TechnologyThis publication describes and analyzes the configuration of over 300 credentials that have been developed by vendors such as Microsoft and professional bodies such as the National Association of Communication Systems Engineers. The first such credential was awarded in 1989. By mid-2000, nearly 1.7 million people worldwide had earned at least one of these certifications. The report covers issues such as the nature of certification examinations, the role of higher education institutions in preparing students for certification, costs of preparation, and the beginnings of accreditation in this new world. It points to the ways in which the "parallel universe" resembles, departs from, and challenges traditional postsecondary education. ?A Closer Look at Women's CollegesThis collection of research papers shows that women's colleges produce achievers and that graduates of women's colleges are more satisfied with their education than women who attended coeducational institutions. It also provides recommendations for future research on women's colleges. ?Answers in the Tool Box: Academic Intensity, Attendance Patterns, and Bachelor's Degree AttainmentHere is a study about what contributes most to long-term bachelor's degree completion of students who attend 4-year colleges, even if they also attend other types of institutions. ?Toward Resiliency: At-Risk Students Who Make It to CollegeThis study examines whether student, parent, and peer engagement factors that contributed to at-risk students' success in graduating from high school continued to be important in making the transition from high school to postsecondary education. ?Diversity and Outcomes in Higher Education: A Symposium to Develop an Agenda for Research?Diversity, Affirmative Action, and Higher Education: Coordination, Collaboration and Dissemination of Information?Leading, Concurrent, or Lagging: the Knowledge Content of Computer Science in Higher Education and the Labor MarketThis monograph traces change in the nature and extent of college students' study of computer science over the period, 1972-1993, the occupational destinations of students with computer science backgrounds, and the forces that shape the path from higher education to the labor market. Its fundamental question is whether what we teach is leading, concurrent, or lagging the state of the labor market in a field in which nothing sits still long enough to measure. ?Women's Colleges in the United States: History, Issues, and ChallengesThis study offers a brief history of women's colleges and presents a summary of research on institutional effects of all-female higher education institutions. Most notably, this report presents data on enrollment, degrees, and staffing. ?Realizing the Potential: Improving Postsecondary Teaching Learning, and AssessmentThis is a synthesis of 18 focused studies and the National Study of Student Learning--the first study to assess students' knowledge gains in each of their first three years of college. This study expands our knowledge about college's impact upon students by examining the simultaneous influence of academic and nonacademic experiences on students' learning, attitudes, and persistence. Members of the higher education community, including faculty, deans, and administrators, will be particularly interested in this publication for the clues it provides for improving the academic environment. ?The New College Course Map and Transcript Files: Changes in Course-Taking Achievement, 1972-1993The Map is based on two national transcript samples from two cohorts of students: those who were high school seniors in 1972 and those who were high school sophomores in 1980. The transcripts came from colleges, trade schools, and other postsecondary institutions attended by these students up to the time they were about 30 years old. The following publications are currently out of print. You may, however, order the text from the ERIC Document System using the ED number provided next to each title. The executive summary for each is also provided.
