Dann-Messier Continues Community Conversations About WIA Reauthorization

Assistant Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier is holding a fourth Community Conversation on reauthorization of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) today in Washington, D.C. This session is designed to gather input from national education groups representing various stakeholders in adult education. Proceedings of all the community conversations will be summarized and made available on the Web soon. Anyone with suggestions for WIA reauthorization is welcome to share them with OVAE electronically. This address does not provide two-way communication.

DOL Kicks Off Tools For America's Job Seekers Challenge

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently announced the kickoff of the first phase of the Tools for America's Job Seekers Challenge. The challenge will connect workers with online career resources and offer businesses and other organizations an opportunity to showcase their best online job search and career advancement tools. Providers of such tools—search engines, job boards and career exploration sites—can learn more and submit their products online. The competition will occur in three phases. During phase one (through Dec. 18, 2009), developers are invited to submit their tools. During phase two (Jan. 4 to15, 2010), job seekers and workforce professionals are invited to test the tools and recommend the ones they find useful. In phase three, to begin on Jan. 18, 2010, DOL will publish the tools receiving the most positive feedback. The national network of nearly 3,000 One-Stop Career Centers will help connect job seekers to the online tools.

Minnesota Creates Training for ABE Support Personnel

Minnesota has created special training resources for adult basic education (ABE) support personnel, providing Web pages and state and local trainings specifically for these key staff. Support duties may include data entry and management, student orientation and assessment, communications and marketing, and student follow-up. Training information and conference agendas for support staff are posted at the site, which is being developed with the guidance of an ABE Program Support Services Advisory Group. The group identifies support staff development needs and plans annual ABE Support Services conferences. Group members are available to respond to questions from support staff that are connected to their ABE work.
