Assistant Secretary Dann-Messier Addresses New State Directors
Newly confirmed OVAE Assistant Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier made one of her first official acts to address nearly 30 state participants attending the New State Directors Workshop in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 20. She told these adult education officials, who are new to their positions, that their work will be critical to the president's American Graduation Initiative (AGI). The initiative calls for an additional 5 million community college graduates by 2020 and new approaches to teaching adults the skills they need to ensure America's economic strength in a competitive world economy. She also discussed her vision for adult education and her upcoming listening tour.
GED's ® 5th Edition Placed On Hold For GED 20/20
The General Education Development Testing Service (GEDTS) announced Oct. 7 that it will not introduce GED ®'s 5th edition, which had been slated for January 2012. Officials plan instead to move from the current GED directly to what they term "a new comprehensive assessment program," GED 20/20. Some elements of GED 20/20 are expected to be introduced as early as next year, GED officials say.
Applications Available For 2010 E Pluribus Unum Prizes
The Migration Policy Institute's National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy just released its application for the 2010 E Pluribus Unum Prizes. The prizes consist of four $50,000 awards, which annually recognize outstanding initiatives that help immigrants and their children adapt, thrive, and contribute to the United States or that have successfully brought immigrants and native-born residents together to build stronger, more cohesive communities. Awards are open to individuals, community organizations, businesses, and government entities, agencies, or officials in the United States. The application deadline is Dec. 10, 2009.
Gates, Lumina Foundations Fund Community College Accountability Effort
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Lumina Foundation for Education recently announced a joint two-year project to create a voluntary accountability system for community colleges. The system is designed to improve programs and graduate more students on time and at a lower cost. The project, funded with $1 million in grants, will pilot the system at up to 20 community colleges by 2011. Leaders from college groups, along with selected community college districts, will develop common measures for the project.
