Secretary Duncan's Team Arriving at ED

For a run-down on Secretary Duncan and other new presidential and political appointees staffing the Department of Education (ED), visit ED's Web site. The list includes individuals whose appointments require Senate confirmation as well as those named to other political jobs. The list will be updated as people are nominated and confirmed or hired.

OVAE Kicks Off Training on How to Use NRS Data Locally

OVAE kicked off a series of three regional trainings on the National Reporting System (NRS) last week. Trainings will help states create and sustain local learning communities that enhance data quality and use the NRS for local program improvement. Regional training materials are posted at the NRS Web site. Trainers also introduced the new NRS Basics Portal, which allows states to explore online training options. More regional sessions are slated for June 9─11 in San Diego, Calif., and June 23─25 in Madison, Wis.

Panel Focuses On President's Goal for Postsecondary Ed

The Center for American Progress recently sponsored an expert panel that explored the opportunities in and challenges of meeting President Obama's goal to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. The panel discussion, the topic of which was Getting to Work: The Tough Journey of Getting to More Postsecondary Degrees, featured representatives of the White House National Economic Council, Boeing Company, Lumina Foundation for Education, Jobs for the Future, and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. New publications on the topic from Jobs for the Future, Cost, Commitment and Attainment in Higher Education, and the center, The Other College, are available online.

ACE Outlines State Policies That Support Adult Learning

The American Council on Education (ACE) maintains an online log of state policies and procedures that support adult learners' access and success. The state-by-state review summarizes recent legislation and policy developments that may have an impact on adult education. Just log on to check out policies in your state or region.
