Second Community College Regional Summit Held in Houston

The U.S. Department of Education held its second regional community college summit on March 9 at Lone Star College in Houston, Texas. The Houston summit addressed strategies for student success and ways to help community college students transfer to four-year schools. The event drew approximately 150 representatives of community colleges, business, labor, industry, philanthropy, state and local governments, and students from a 10-state area ranging from Florida to New Mexico. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter provided opening remarks and moderated the luncheon panel, entitled "Exemplary Practices in Two-to-Four Year Transfer."

During his address to the gathering, Richard Carpenter, chancellor of the Lone Star College System, stated "In the past, we almost had to apologize for being a community college. The conversation has definitely shifted." He went on to say that community colleges, like Lone Star, are key drivers helping to revitalize the nation's economy and reach President Obama's 2020 goal for the United States to once again have the highest college completion rate in the world.

The four national summits, titled "Challenges, Solutions, and Commitments," continue the discussion that began last October with the first-ever White House Summit on Community Colleges. The first regional summit was held last week in Philadelphia, and one more will be held in San Diego on April 15. OVAE Adult Education Job Announcement

OVAE is hiring a Management Program Analyst (GS-343-14) to work on the Division of Adult Education and Literacy's Accountability Team. The vacancy announcements are currently posted on USAJOBs and are scheduled to close on March 29. OVAE is recruiting from all sources for the position. Prospective applicants are expected to possess: the ability to conduct independent fact-finding; experience analyzing legislation and policy documents; experience writing for a policy-making audience; and, knowledge of state and federal education-related policy-making processes and procedures. OVAE Welcomes David Eugene Clark, III

OVAE is happy to announce that David Eugene Clark, III, a second -year graduate student at Howard University studying public administration with a self-designed program in education policy and administration, has joined the OVAE team as a volunteer student intern. Clark is serving across OVAE providing technical support for work with foundations, audit resolutions, constituent input, and employee survey results. In addition to working for OVAE Clark works as a substitute teacher in the Alexandria City Public Schools.

Education Secretary Addresses International Summit on the Teaching Profession

"What can be learned from other countries to develop a more effective educational system for one's own country?" That was the critical question addressed by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan when he hosted the first International Summit on the Teaching Profession in New York City on March 18–19. The event marked the first time education ministers, teachers and union leaders from 25 nations around the world convened in the United States to discuss best practices for building a world-class teaching force. The discussions centered on promising practices for recruiting, preparing, developing, supporting, retaining, evaluating and compensating teachers. The goal was to help spread effective policies and practices to strengthen and elevate the teaching profession in ways that improve educational outcomes for children in all societies.

Partnering with ED on the summit were the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Education International (EI), and U.S.-based organizations that included the National Education Association (NEA), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), Asia Society, and WNET. Resources on the issues include Building a High Quality Teaching Profession, a background paper composed by the OECD that outlines international analysis, lessons, and examples around key issues, and What the U.S. Can Learn from the World's Most Successful Education Reform Efforts, a new position paper addressing key issues on Secretary Duncan's agenda for the International Summit that provides recommendations to re-establish the U.S. as a world leader in education.
